Texas Governor Greg Abbott wants public state universities to keep tuition costs the same for the next two years.

He made this clear in a letter he sent to leaders of public colleges and universities on Wednesday. Abbott explained that families are already facing high costs for things like food, gas, and housing.

“When inflation and other economic pressures burden household budgets, our public universities must take every step possible to ease the financial burden on our students and their families,” Abbott wrote.

He also shared that his office has been talking with the Board of Regents at every public university system in Texas. Abbott says all the boards agree to keep tuition prices steady through the 2026 and 2027 school years.

ABBOTT STANDS FORM ON HIS DECISION

“I will not support any tuition increase at any public higher education institution in the upcoming biennium,” Abbott added, making it clear that he does not want costs to go up.

Abbott promised that keeping college affordable will continue to be a “top priority” in the next Texas legislative session. He wants to help families and students who are already dealing with high prices everywhere else.

This plan means students might be able to keep paying the same tuition, at least for the 2026-2027 academic years, which could really help families save money. For now, students and parents can hope that college stays affordable.

 WHAT ARE YOU THOUGHTS?

How do you feel about Abbott’s fight for affordable higher education? Do you think his focus is in the right place or do you think there is a bigger problem like inflation that should be resolved instead of applying a band aid to it’s side effects?
