Texas Urging Residents to Not Feed Ducks When I walked into my grandma's house and saw a bag of stale bread on the counter I knew what that meant- WE'RE GOING TO THE DUCK POND!
It's been engraved in my mind, don't discard the stale bread, save it for the duck pond. At 5 years old I could have never imagined that fun moment was actually harming the ducks.
Stop! Put Down That Stale Bread—The Ducks Deserve Better!
Whether you're at your local park or a neighborhood pond, chances are you'll spot some ducks. Feeding them can be fun, but it’s important to keep them safe and healthy.
Skip the Bread—Seriously! Tossing bread to ducks might seem harmless, but it’s actually bad for them. Bread doesn’t have the nutrients ducks need, and eating too much can make them sick. Plus, leftover bread can mess up the water by causing algae to grow. Yuck!
What to Feed Them Instead Want to feed the ducks? Awesome! Just bring along these healthier snacks:
- Seedless grapes (cut in half)
- Chopped lettuce or leafy greens
- Birdseed or duck pellets
- Peas, corn, or oats
These foods are tasty and good for the ducks—win-win!
Keep Wildlife Safe While you’re out enjoying nature, be sure to clean up after yourself. If you’re fishing, don’t leave behind any fishing lines, hooks, or lures. Ducks and other animals can get tangled up and hurt.
