An Iowa woman helped solve a Texas murder case after discovering the man she was dating had killed his brother.

A man holding a sign on the side of the road caught Eddie Mason's attention as he was driving. The man, who went by 'James' was holding a sign that said he was a veteran looking for help. Mason pulled over and offered his support. Mason took James in, gave him a place to stay in his home, and gave him a job.

Soon after James was given a helping hand, he met Janey Voyek, the sister of Eddie Mason. Voyek and James quickly hit it off and began dating. However, things took a turn when Voyek received a drunk call from James.

"He just kind of got mad and crazy and just bluntly told me that he had murdered his brother two years ago," Voyek said.

Voyak immediately called her brother and told her what James had just confessed. Mason quickly confronted James, who confirmed the confession and was then kicked out of the house.

"Nobody ever seen him be this kind of person or to ever expect that it would ever come out that he was a murderer," Voyek said.

Police were contacted and James was located by a Calhoun County deputy; that's when everything came to light. "James" was actually a 39-year-old man whose real name is Kyle Coolack.

Coolack had been on the run from Houston police after murdering his brother back in 2022.

Coolack was arrested and extradited to Texas.
