Paint It Black, based on Janet Fitch’s cult novel, stars Alia Shawkat as an artist whose hard-partying ways come to a halt after her boyfriend dies and his terrifying mother, Janet McTeer, blames her for his death. It’s the kind of pulpy, Hitchcockian film you don’t see much of these days, and the trailer looks incredible.

Paint It Black is actress Amber Tamblyn’s directorial debut, and after a decade-long struggle to finally make it into a film, she explained to Indiewire what drew her to the story:

I just had this very instantaneous, cinematic, visceral reaction to the language of the book. I really felt like, ‘Wow. Wouldn’t that make for a great movie, just about the tormented, grief-ridden, inside, interior minds of women?’

The trailer is something to behold, and the dreamlike quality of some sequences plus the stylized black and white make it look like the kind of twisted psychological thriller that’ll pair perfectly with the likes of What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?

What happens to a dream when the dreamer is gone? PAINT IT BLACK is the story of the aftermath of Michael's death, and Josie's struggle to hold onto the true world he shared with her. As Josie searches for the key to understanding his death, she finds herself both repelled and attracted to Michael's pianist mother, Meredith, who holds Josie responsible for her son's torment. Soon, the two women find themselves drawn into a twisted relationship reflecting equal parts distrust and blind need.

Paint It Black hits VOD October 3.
