AMC’s ‘Preacher’ Puckers Up a First Look at ‘Arseface’
You might not know it by the solemn first trailer, but AMC’s long-awaited Preacher adaptation will bring plenty of weirdness and colorful characters with outlandish afflictions. Case in point, the first official photo of Eugene “Arseface” Root has arrived, a bit scaled down from the comics, but no less unseemly.
Seth Rogen tweeted the first official photo of Ian Coletti in character as Arseface, a character named for … well, you get it. Having attempted to kill himself with a shotgun to the mouth, Arseface’s casting breakdown was described thusly:
Stomach-churningly difficult to look at, Eugene’s the town’s reviled Frankenstein’s monster, but that won’t change his earnest, sweet and pure outlook on life. However, he is troubled by something terrible he’s done in the past — something he fears might have turned God himself against him.
In addition to Dominic Cooper’s titular role as Jesse Custer, the cast of AMC’s Preacher includes Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. veteran Ruth Negga as Tulip, Misfits star Joseph Gilgun as Irish vampire Cassidy, Jackie Earle Haley as Odin Quincannon, W. Earl Brown as Arseface’s father, Elizabeth Perkins as Vyla Quinncannon, True Blood vamp Lucy Griffiths, along with Jamie Anne Allman and Derek Wilson as Betsy and Donny Schenck.
For those unfamiliar with the 1990s comic series from Garth Ennis and artist Steve Dillon, AMC’s official description of Preacher reads:
Preacher is about Jesse Custer, a conflicted Preacher in a small Texas town who merges with a creature that has escaped from heaven and develops the ability to make anyone do anything he says. Along with his ex-girlfriend, Tulip, and an Irish vampire named Cassidy, the three embark on a journey to literally find God.
The original Preacher had itself been optioned for various adaptations many times over the years, while AMC’s incarnation will deviate from the comic in certain respects. Sam Catlin (Breaking Bad) will serve as executive producer and showrunner for the new series, while fellow producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg will direct the pilot episode, having written the script with Catlin.
Preacher will officially premiere on May 22, so stay tuned for the latest.
