The San Antonio Public Library has announced that a book that was checked out in 1943 has finally been returned. Can you imagine what the library fines are for an overdue library book from 1943? Luckily, the San Antonio Public Library wasn't too harsh about it, but there have been people in Victoria who have had a warrant out for their arrest for not returning a library book.

The book's journey to Mexico and Oregon.

The book was recently found in Oregon and mailed back to the San Antonio Public Library. The name of the book is "Your Child, His Family, and Friends" by Frances Bruce, and it was returned with a letter. The book was checked out in July of 1943 and was due back 28 days after it was checked out.
The overdue library book traveled from San Antonio to Mexico and Oregon before being returned.
In a press release from the San Antonio Public Library, the letter states that the book was checked out before the person who checked it out was transferred to work at the United States Embassy in Mexico City. In the letter, the writer hoped there wouldn't be a late fee because "grandma won't be able to pay for it." But luckily, the San Antonio Library did away with fines in 2021.
An overdue library book almost sent people in Victoria to jail.
In the late 90s, I received a notice in the mail that I hadn't returned a book from a few years back. The letter stated that there was a warrant for my arrest if I did not take care of the fine. Of course, I paid for the book that I couldn't find. I didn't realize that overdue library books were that serious!
After talking to people, I discovered that I wasn't the only one who received a similar notice from the Victoria Public Library. And according to the Victoria Public Library's website, overdue library books can be turned over to the City of Victoria Municipal Court if fines and fees are not paid!
