Calhoun High School Students Learn About Industrial Trades at Victoria College
Calhoun High School students interested in industrial trades got some hands-on experience earlier this month at Victoria college.
Over 100 students from the school visited the Industrial Training Center at Victoria College’s Emerging Technology Complex on February 6th and 7th to explore industrial trades career opportunities. VC Industrial Programs Director Dwayne Maly said that since welding and millwrighting are taught at Calhoun, the college was able to give them some hands-on practice. Students experienced Victoria College’s state-of-the-art simulators for welding, and also participated in hands-on electrical and millwrighting activities.
Calhoun ISD counselor Brandi Williams said the experience was great.
“A lot of the juniors are going to be making decisions this summer on whether or not they will apply for college or go straight into the workforce. Our freshmen and sophomores are choosing courses this week for next year. We’re offering five different pathways next year – welding, millwright, electrical, plumbing and construction. So getting some hands-on experience in those areas will allow them to make better choices for next year.”
Maly said Victoria College plans to offer a similar event for other high schools in the Crossroads region.
Victoria College offers associate degrees, certificates and workforce training courses that lead to careers in a number of industrial trades, including carpentry, electrical, electronics technology, HVAC, instrumentation, millwright, pipefitting, plumbing, power line worker, process technology, truck driving and welding.
