CBS Still Won’t Commit to ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Fall Premiere
Star Trek: Discovery has been making plenty of progress with casting and production, though fans are still a bit unnerved by the change in schedule from January, to May, to fall. Even now, CBS brass won’t nail down a fall premiere window, saying “we’re not tied to any specific release date.”
The first delay in Star Trek: Discovery’s production was an understandable one, as the departure of showrunner Bryan Fuller necessitated some time to adjust. CBS makes getting Star Trek right for the next generation a priority, and a new Vulture interview with CBS Interactive president Marc DeBevoise sees the network unwilling to place their bets on fall:
It’s going great, I’ve actually been up there [to the set]. It is, you know, phenomenal. It is huge. And we’re very excited about the content, the creators, the actors, all coming together. As you said, we’re not tied to any specific release date. It’ll be there when we’re ready to do it, and when we feel it’s in a great place. We’re not worried about anything here. We’re excited, and we’ll have more specifics as we get closer to what will likely be the release dates.
Is it likely going to be the fall?
We’re not stating.
Now confirmed to feature Sonequa Martin-Green as First Officer Michael Burnham, Star Trek: Discovery has among the cast Rainn Wilson as Harry Mudd, Jason Isaacs as Captain Lorca, James Frain as Spock’s father Sarek, Doug Jones as an alien science officer, Adam Rapp as the TV franchise’s first openly-gay character and Michelle Yeoh as Captain of a different ship, along with assorted crew and several Klingon roles. Ex-showrunner Bryan Fuller also recently stepped up to clarify his limited involvement in the project going forward.
Shooting in Toronto, the new 13-episode Star Trek: Discovery is officially said to take place 10 years before Kirk’s original Enterprise mission, as well to be “heavily serialized.” The new series will also explore the fallout of an event referenced, but never seen in the original series. Wrath of Khan director Nicholas Meyer has also joined the creative side along with Gene Roddenberry’s son Rod, fan-favorite Voyager novel alum Kirsten Beyer, franchise vet Joe Menosky and Heroes writer Aron Coleite.
Star Trek: Discovery will likely set a premiere in the next few months, but watch the production teaser below while we wait.
