Donna High Pep Rallies: Keeping Music Traditions Alive
Every year, High School Football season also means pep rally season, and in deep South Texas, that means a totally different vibe. I recently came across a TikTok video showing a high school pep rally with a Conjunto Band playing a huapango with a gym floor full of kids dancing. What a beautiful sight!
@dhs.official.acco ONLY AT DONNA HIGH SCHOOL! ❤️ Conjunto Nueva Era started playing a huapango at today’s Fiesta Pep Rally and apparently our Redskins said… “Are we supposed to just SIT HERE and listen?!” ABSOLUTELY NOT! Because when the huapango starts at Donna High, EVERYBODY DANCES! Students, teachers, administrators, football players… even MOMMA! ❤️ Watch closely and see if you can spot our Redskin quarterback dancing with his momma! ❤️ And you already KNOW Donna High School’s very own Miguel Hidalgo wasn’t going to let a good huapango go to waste! One thing about our Redskins… we’re going to celebrate our culture LOUD and PROUD! This wasn’t just a pep rally — THIS WAS A FIESTA! Conjunto Nueva Era understood the assignment! ❤️ #fiesta #highschool #conjunto #donnahighschool ♬ original sound - DHS Official Account
There is also a middle school Conjunto program.
I reached out to Donna High School and spoke with the group's musical director, Dominga Garza. She confirms the name of the group in the video is Donna High School's Conjunto Nueva Era. Dominga is also the musical director for a middle school Conjunto group called Conjunto Juvenile Era.
Dominga shares her appreciation for the school board for their support of these programs that teach our Tejano and Conjunto culture to the next generation. Conjunto music is normally associated with the older generation. It is so awesome to see this fire for this type of music with 6th-12th graders. We also applaud the school district in Donna, alongside Mrs. Garza, for bringing Conjunto and Tejano to the next generation.
