Victoria’s Isaac De Los Santos to Perform at Flaco’s Curtain Call
Last week, the world learned of the passing of Tejano/Conjunto icon Flaco Jimenez. While no official cause of death has been issued, we know that family surrounded Flaco and might have been under Hospice care. In a statement issued by Flaco's family, they extend thanks to "Beacon Hospice and Flaco's entire medical team."
Flaco Jiménez’s Final Curtain Call Memorial Service will happen in San Antonio on Thursday, August 7, at the Carver Cultural Center. The event kicks off at 6 p.m. and is open to the public. It will be a prayer service followed by a musical tribute by Los Texmaniacs and special guests.
Victoria's very own Isaac De Los Santos to appear as special guest.
As part of Flaco's Final Curtain Call, many musicians will play a part in the tribute, including Victoria's own Isaac De Los Santos. Isaac was born in Victoria in 1975 and has recently been inducted into the Tejano Roots Hall of Fame with over 40 years of playing in the Tejano/Conjunto genre.
His musical journey includes Tremendos V, one of the most recognized Conjunto bands of all time. Jimmy Lee Y Tentatzion, Grupo Rey, Invicto, Los Garcia Brothers, The Hometown Boys, Nick Villareal, and many more. Isaac also had the pleasure of jamming with the legendary Flaco Jimenez.
Isaac joined Flaco on stage multiple times:
Isaac met Flaco while recording an album at Flaco's home studio in San Antonio. After the two met, Isaac sat in with Flaco and shared the stage with Flaco for a few gigs. One of Isaacs' most memorable gigs with Flaco was at a place called Rubens Lounge in SA. On this day, Flaco jokingly gave Isaac his Grammys. That's a pretty incredible story. Flaco was humble and reminded Isaac of his grandfather
Flaco was a genuine, kind, person.
When Isaacs' family moved to San Antonio, he had a car break down, and Flaco was kind enough to let them keep it at his house for a while till they could get it fixed. Isaacs' dad also helped Flaco and bandmates get to a gig once after Flaco's transportation broke down. These actions led to a friendship that led to yearly birthday calls between Flaco, Arturo, and Isaac. When Isaacs' dad passed away, Flaco and his son, Arturo, offered condolences. Flaco was indeed a genuine person.
Flaco requested that Isaac sing at his Curtain Call.
Isaac received a call from Flaco's son, Aruturo Jimenez, who stated that Flaco requested Isaac sing “I Did It My Way” at any remembrance for him. "What an honor and privilege to be asked to do that for my friend," Isaac says.
What is one thing Isaac learned from Flaco?
One thing Isaac learned from Flaco was to never let your a** grow bigger than your britches. In other words, stay humble and don't let fame or recognition kill who you are. He was definitely the epitome of that lesson. There will never be another like him.
Rest in Peace, Flaco Jimenez!
