If all of my knowledge about Los Angeles was taken from movies I’ve seen (and, honestly, it is), I’d say that L.A. was full of high-profile murders, shifty-eyed detectives, and women who look very cool doing regular stuff. That’s certainly the vibe I get from the trailer of Aaron Katz’s Gemini, which stars Lola Kirke as an actress’s (Zoe Kravitz) personal assistant and buddy who gets wrapped up in a shocking murder mystery.

“You might not think something’s important, and then, bingo, it’s the key to the whole thing,” John Cho’s detective intones at the end of the trailer. It sets the movie up as a kind of throwback murder mystery thriller, with all the elements of the L.A. crime movies you love wrapped in a blue-tinged, neon-soaked aesthetic.

Our own Britt Hayes saw Gemini at SXSW and loved it, writing in her review, “Simple in both concept and execution, Gemini rewards viewers who aren’t anxious to outsmart it, and are more interested in seeing a movie that’s, you know, good.” It doesn’t hit theaters until spring 2018, but you’ll definitely want to keep an eye out for it when it does.

A heinous crime tests the complex relationship between a tenacious personal assistant and her Hollywood starlet boss. As the assistant unravels the mystery, she must confront her own understanding of friendship, truth, and celebrity.
