Amarillo is know for many different things. Cadillac Ranch, The Big Texan, and now the newest Buc-ee's in America.

While those things have a tendency to be the first things people mention when they talk about the city, it's not the thing most locals would bring up to someone.

That belongs to the wind. It's the first thing you're going to hear me mention to someone when they ask about us, and with good reason.

For the longest time, Amarillo has ranked at the top of the list when it comes to windiest cities in America. It's the one thing we can count on year to year.

Well, the wind rankings for 2024 have been released, and well, the "Windy City" (Chicago) still ain't got nothing on the 806.

For the umpteenth year in a row, Amarillo is ranked as the windiest city in America. However, our gap has closed...slightly.

HOW WINDY IS AMARILLO

With an average wind speed of 12.9 mph, we clear number two on the list, but .9 mph, which is down from a full mph last year.

The highest recorded wind speed ever for the city remains 84 mph back in 1949.

WHAT CAUSES AMARILLO TO BE SO WINDY

The fact that we are located in the Great Plains is the biggest reason for our wind. Because the air pressure is relatively unstable, coupled with the fact that we have so much flat terrain, it creates more opportunity to pick up speed.

Major cities have a tendency to not reach the wind speeds on a consistent basis because of all the built up areas.

ARE THERE ANY OTHER TEXAS CITIES COMPARABLE TO AMARILLO

Well, our neighbor to the south landed at number three on the list. Lubbock has a very similar terrain to Amarillo and is close proximity to us, so they get a lot of the same wind speeds. They checked in at an average of 12 mph.

Corpus Christi found themselves right behind Lubbock at number four on the list with an average wind speed of 11.7 mph, Their highest recorded wind speed ever was back in 1970 when it hit 161 mph, but they are also prone to hurricane-type weather there as they sit on the water.

Wichita Falls and Abilene both checked in on the top 10 list as well at numbers eight and ten respectively.
