John Paul Jones Unveils New Project, Sons of Chipotle
Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones has announced the first appearances for his latest project, Sons of Chipotle. The band will perform at the Pit in Tokyo on Sept. 3 and 5.
The rock legend teams up with acclaimed Finnish cellist Anssi Karttunen in Sons of Chipotle. Regarded as one of the world's greatest modern cellists, Karttunen has performed with symphonies all over the world, including London, Los Angeles and Paris.
“Both musicians are known to be curious minds, always ready to learn and to discover,” reads a statement posted to Jones’ official website. “When they improvise, borders disappear, they are free to migrate beyond prejudices, across continents. In a world where walls are being built and people are told where they cannot go, Sons of Chipotle want music to be a place of openness.”
The Tokyo performances will feature Jones on piano and electronics, with Karttunen on cello. The duo will also be joined by guest musicians during the sets.
Sons of Chipotle are the latest edition to a long list of musical endeavors for Jones. In 2009, the bassist famously teamed with Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl and Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age to form the group Them Cooked Vultures. More recently, Jones joined forces with Norwegian producer Helge Sten for the avant-garde collaboration Minibus Pimps. Additional post-Zeppelin projects have included collaborations with R.E.M., Heart and blues musician Seasick Steve.
Jones previously aligned with Karttunen in the improvisational trio Tres Coyotes. In that group, the musicians were joined by composer Max Lindberg.
