Pedal to the Metal Next Weekend at the Texas Mile
"I feel the need...for speed" is the famous line from the movie Top Gun, but if the speed you need is the kind that stays on the pavement, then the Texas Mile is for you. Whether you like to go fast yourself and need a safe, legal way to do it or, if you're a spectator, the event is back next weekend.
Set for another run at Victoria Regional Airport, the most recognized 1-Mile Top Speed Racing event in the world, the Texas Mile returns to the Victoria Regional Airport March 23rd-25th, with the fastest performance cars and motorcycles from across the country to testing their limits in a 1-mile stretch.
Back in 2003 the event began with as few as 35 participants in Goliad. Fifteen years later, the flat-out speed test event now hosts over 220 entrants with thousands of spectators, and means lots of tourism dollars for the local economy.
Last year during the March event, drivers set multiple speed records. M2K Motorsports will be back with their 2006 Ford GT driven by Patrick O’Gorman, a car that set the standing mile world record at 293.6 MPH. Holy crap that's fast! AirTech of Houston will also be returning with their 2011 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 which holds the Ford Mustang 1-Mile World Record at 260.8 MPH, a speed also set last year at the event.
Plenty of things for spectators and participants to enjoy are set for this year's event including bleacher seating, shaded viewing areas, food trucks, even free bus transportation will be available to shuttle spectators between different event areas throughout each day.
Hotels, motels, RV parks, and quaint B&B's around the Victoria area will be available for visitors. Here is some additional information about the event.
