Any contemporary sequel to The Ring would have to incorporate the internet, and why not? It just makes sense. Destroying a videotape is one thing, but how do you stop a haunted video once it’s been uploaded to the seemingly infinite void known as the worldwide web? You can’t. Such is the premise for Rings, the repeatedly-delayed sequel to Gore Verbinski’s 2002 remake of the Japanese horror classic which has a brand-new trailer ahead of its February release.

It doesn’t look like Paramount will change that date again, for better or worse. And it could very well be the latter, as Rings looks fairly basic — aside from a few particularly gross gags involving ropes of hair and skin-peeling. The new sequel, directed by F. Javier Gutierrez, seems to expand a bit on the original mythology (what is up with that weird Ring-shaped mark on our protagonist’s back?), and the latest trailer has a dark fairytale vibe to underscore that idea.

Here’s the official synopsis, which mentions a “dark subculture” devoted to the infamously spooky videotape, which seems about right:

A young woman becomes worried about her boyfriend when he explores a dark subculture surrounding a mysterious videotape said to kill the watcher seven days after he has viewed it. She sacrifices herself to save her boyfriend and in doing so makes a horrifying discovery: there is a “movie within the movie” that no one has ever seen before.

Rings stars Matilda Lutz, Alex Roe, Johnny Galecki, Aimee Teegarden and Vincent D’Onofrio (who seems to have become the go-to guy for scholarly-type characters in horror films), and hits theaters on February 3.
