It's a sad day and bad news for those of us who love Luby's Cafeterias as FOX7News Austin revealed, "Documents filed by Luby's show the restaurant chain expects to cease most restaurant operations in August, which is the end of its fiscal year. In the filings, it states that liquidation is imminent and " the likelihood is remote that we will return from liquidation.

The last I heard about the Luby's legendary businesses closing was in September 2020 when I read Texas local Pappa's Restaurant owners and brothers, Chris and Harris Pappa were looking into taking Luby's over.

As a Luby's lover, my thought was that Luby's would undoubtedly recover then.

Today, however, the Dallas News reports, "The company is moving forward with liquidation. As of Jan. 27, Chris Pappas (who operates Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen, Pappasito’s Cantina and Pappas Bros. Steakhouse) resigned as CEO and president of Luby’s Inc. He remains the company’s largest shareholder."

Bob Luby opened his first Luby's Cafeteria restaurant in 1947 in San Antonio. The Luby's Cafeteria website writes that his goal was to "serve good, fresh food in a setting people would want to come back to time and time again. A place that felt like home."

With its famous Luby's Luann Platter, millions of Texans have ordered homestyle food from their famous buffet lines for the last 65 years.

I will never forget the day we walked up the Luby's at Victoria Mall with our kids in tow only to find out they had closed their doors in Victoria by way of leaving a note on the door. We stood frozen trying to process how that could possibly be the case and if it meant a temporary close or a permanent one. We knew we were in trouble when our then three-year-old little girl started to cry. Tears rolled down her eyes as we put her back in her car seat. "But I love blue Jello" were her final words on the matter.

So did we kiddo. So did we. There wasn't a week that went by when we didn't patron our Victoria Lubys. As a family with very diverse taste buds, Lubys was our go-to family restaurant. Throughout the last few years, we would occasionally travel to eat at Luby's in several remaining cafeterias, like our favorite one in San Antonio.

It seems our fellow Texans are just as upset as we were when we learned our local Victoria Luby's closed. This Youtube video on reactions to Luby's closing in San Antonio in 2020 brought to you by KENS5 San Antonio.

What was your favorite meal at Luby's?

I don't think it's too far of a reach to say Texas just won't be the same without our beloved Lubys. I'm perusing eBay for Luby cookbooks right now!

Here is what some of our listeners on KIXS 108 had to say about their favorite meal at Lubys.
