ARE YOU PREPARED?

Christmas day is supposed to be sunny with temperatures in the 40s. This is the season's first freeze, are you prepared? Officials are urging Texans to make sure they are prepared for the cold days to come. Below are a few tips for keeping your home prepared inside and out.

Cover or bring in your plants to avoid them freezing. If you have a sprinkler system you will want to completely drain those pipes.

Outdoor Piping

A simple way to protect your outdoor pipes is to cover them with foam padding found at most hardware stores.

PREPARING THE INSIDE OF YOUR HOME

Faucets

Busted pipes are a nightmare. Expensive and time-consuming, and you are going to want to avoid this from happening at all costs. Leaving your faucet on with more than just a drip can greatly reduce your chances of a pipe bursting. Turn all faucets, including the tub, on with a light but constant flow of water.

Keeping Warm

Help keep cold air out and warm air in, over all the areas where air can get inside, like doors leading outside. If the power happens to go out during freezing weather, try to keep everyone in one area and close doors to help prevent the warm area from flowing into other areas of the home.

Also, be sure your space heaters are up to date. While it is standard for heaters to have a tilt shut-off feature, many older models do not.
