UTSA Announces First-Ever College Tejano Ensemble ‘Sonido Tejano’
This is a proud moment for our Tejano culture! Shelly Lares, who mentors students in music technology, coaches vocalists, and leads the Mariachi ensemble, has just added another job title to her resume. She is now also leading the nation's first-ever college Tejano ensemble, "Sonido Tejano."
The history of Tejano music is now a part of the UTSA curriculum.
Students are now studying and performing authentic Tejano music from where it originated, Conjunto, Orquesta, and into the evolution of progressive modern tejano in a live ensemble setting as part of the official UTSA curriculum. This is incredible. The announcement was made via Shelly Lares Fans Facebook page.
Not only is Sonido Tejano led by Shelly Lares, it is also led by accomplished musician and mentor Michael Acevedo, who is also the director of the Mariachi group. "Sonido Tejano" will feature students playing the following instruments: drums, bass, guitar, accordion, keyboard, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, percussion (congas & timbales), and bajo sexto.
They are learning from some of the biggest names in Tejano.
The students have already started to learn music from Ram Herrera, Los Aguilares, Latin Breed, Los Fabulosos Cuarto, David Lee Garza, and the iconic Don Fito Olivares. We cannot wait to see the program flourish.
Shelly Lares was one of the best to ever perform on stage.
Even though Shelly is retired, that doesn't mean that we can take a moment to appreciate her performing on stage.
