Watch: Abbott’s New Plan to Protect the Texas Border
On Thursday, June 10th Texas Governor Greg Abbott released his plans to help with the Texas border crisis that is going on in more than 34 southern counties. According to Abbott “the border crisis is plaguing the farmers, ranchers, and residents,” the most and causing county expenses to skyrocket. Because of the ongoing illegal immigration, law enforcement must continuously redirect their time and energy to the border crisis rather than focusing on their communities.
According to Abbott in the past several months there has been an increase in apprehensions in Texas. When comparing April 2020 and April 2021 there is a clear increase in apprehensions issued by local police. For example, in April of 2020, there were 17,000 apprehensions compared to April of 2021 over 170,000 have been apprehended, leading to what Abbott calls a 1,000% increase.

Abbott states that all these challenges are based on the open border policies that are now in place by the new administration. The reason for this is because it is now easier to come across the border due to “The Remain in Mexico Policy” being completely abandoned according to Abbott.
PLAN OF ACTION
On June 10th Abbott approved a $1 billion allocation appointed by the state legislature to aid in border security in Texas. Abbott explains that this bill will “put more boots on the ground, more aircraft and drones in the air, and more boats in the water.”
Governor Abbott also issued immediate help to over 34 counties by issuing the Governor Disaster Declaration.
