Historic Battleship Texas was on the Verge of Sinking
The Battleship Texas floating monument was almost not floating anymore according to officials. Park authorities shut down the monument "until further notice" after crews came in Monday morning and noticed a 15 degree tilt to the main hull of the ship. Crews then discovered quite a few leaks in the ship causing it to take on a lot of water thus causing it to lean.
No word yet on when the La Porte, TX monument will reopen to the public. Crews are still in the process of pumping out water and repairing the leaks.
Battleship Texas was commissioned to active duty in 1914 and served in both WWI and WWII and even took part in the infamous D-Day invasion providing fire support from her big guns for allied troops landing on the beach.
The ship was decommissioned in 1948 and moved to San Jacinto (near La Porte) Texas where it remains today as a floating museum.
