The dispute intensified when Sylvia Castillo, who claims to be Canales’ first and legal wife, presented a marriage certificate dated August 13, 1980, from Duval County, Texas. Castillo asserts that she and Canales were never divorced, making her his legal widow under Texas law.

Here are the latest development development concerning the estate of late Tejano music legend Johnny Canales, a judge has ordered the freezing of his assets and appointed a temporary administrator to oversee the estate. This decision comes amid a contentious legal battle involving claims from Sylvia Castillo, who asserts she is the sole surviving spouse of Canales, and Nora Canales, who is also claiming rights to the estate.

During a hearing today in a Nueces County Court, Castillo, represented by attorney Steve Lopez, argued for an accounting and temporary injunction to prevent Nora Canales from using or depleting the estate’s assets without court oversight. Castillo’s claim is based on her marriage to Johnny Canales in 1980, although Nora Canales’ attorney, Abel Cavada, contested this, citing Castillo’s multiple marriages and divorces since then.
