Horrific Babysitting Abuse Nearly Kills 5 Month Old In Texas

It's one of the worst fears of any mother. She struggles to leave her babies with someone she trusts let alone a new sitter. Tragically for mom, Fidelina Velasquez, every mother's fear became her horrific reality.

It's January 19th in College Station, Texas and Fidelina leaves her 5-month-old son, Adrian along with his 2-year-old brother, with new babysitter, Berta Evelin Lopez Vasquez. It was the second time Vasquez, who was recommended by a family friend, was called to babysit Fidelina's precious sons.

Sadly hours later, baby Adrian would be furiously shaken by the impatient hands of Lopez and thrown six feet into a wall when he wouldn't stop crying. The impact of shaking a baby can mean loss of brain cells and is considered child abuse. As soon as  Adrian hit the wall his eyes rolled back and he stopped breathing.

Baby Adain continues to fight for his little life.

Scheduled for his second surgery this week at Texas Children's Hospital, no one knows if Baby Adrian will ever recover from the abuse he suffered.

Berta Evelin Lopez Vasquez is justifiably in jail, charged with serious bodily injury to a child. Her bond has been set at $200,000.00 KTXS reports.

Here is how just shaking a baby can be dangerous.

When a baby is shaken hard by the shoulders, arms, or legs, it can cause learning disabilities, behavior disorders, vision problems or blindness, hearing and speech issues, seizures, cerebral palsy, serious brain injury, and permanent disability, WebMD offers. It's called Shaken Baby Syndrome and it's serious. Very serious.

The statistics for Shaken Baby Syndrome might shock you.

"It is estimated that 1,000-3,000 children in the United States suffer from SBS each year. One-fourth of victims of SBS die, and 80 percent of survivors suffer from permanent damage" Health.gov offers.

Our thoughts are with Baby Adrian and his family. We will continue to keep you updated.
