If you were up late last night, you heard your phone go off and you probably thought, 'Amber Alert!' It was not, it was a blue alert, but what exactly is a 'blue alert?' A Blue Alert notifies the public of suspects who have either killed or seriously injured a peace officer, meeting the below criteria:

  • A law enforcement officer must have been killed or seriously injured by an offender.
  • The investigating law enforcement agency must determine that the offender poses a serious risk or threat to the public and other law enforcement personnel.
  • A detailed description of the offender's vehicle, vehicle tag, or partial tag must be made available for broadcast to the public.
  • The investigating law enforcement agency of jurisdiction must recommend the activation of the Blue Alert to the Texas Department of Public Safety

Just in case you didn't know, there are six types of alerts that can be sent to your cell phone at any time.

AMBER ALERT: This is probably the most recognized alert.  It stands for AMERICA'S MISSING: BROADCAST EMERGENCY RESPONSE). This alert is sent out when a child has been abducted or believed to be in danger of death, sexual assault, or bodily injury.

A CLEAR ALERT: This Stands for Coordinated Law Enforcement Adult Rescue. This type of Alert is similar to an AMBER Alert, but it is sent out for an adult rather than a child.

A SILVER ALERT: I have been seeing this more lately. A Silver Alert notifies the public with an elderly individual with a documented medical condition is missing.

ENDANGERED MISSING PERSON ALERT:  If someone who has been diagnosed with an intellectual disability is reported missing, an Endangered Missing Persons Alert is sent to the public.

CAMO ALERT:  I just learned of this one. A Camo Alert informs the public that a current or former member of the United States armed forces, including the National Guard or a reserve, with a mental illness, is missing.

As reported by KHOU, A Clay County Deputy was shot during a traffic stop involving the vehicle of interest. The deputy was slightly wounded but will be ok. As of this morning, the suspect's vehicle has been located, but no arrests have been made.  The Blue Alert remains active(8:33 AM 8/17)
