A company that produces baby formula is issuing a big recall. The company Abbott Nutrition has recently issued a voluntary recall of some of their popular formulas including Similac.

WHICH FORMULAS ARE AFFECTED?

The company has issued a voluntary recall on Similac®, Alimentum®, and EleCare®. They specifically pinpointed the recall at those powder formulas made in their Sturgis, Michigan facility. 'The recall does not include any metabolic deficiency nutrition formulas.'

HOW TO CHECK IF YOUR FORMULA IS PART OF THE RECALL

Since only baby formulas are made in their Sturgis facility the company provides a way to check where yours came from. There are 'lot numbers' that can tell you where the formula came from.

HOW TO LOCATE YOUR LOT NUMBER

The Lot Number should be located on the bottom of the container.

CHECK LOT NUMBER

Impacted lots will start with a 22 through 37, not including the letter at the beginning. Example: L31465SH00

There have been four consumer complaints related to Cronobacter sakazakii or Salmonella Newport in infants who had consumed powder infant formula manufactured in this facility.

 WHAT IS CRONOBACTER SAKAZAKII?

This is a natural bacteria that can be found in oil, water, certain foods, and in-home environments. In rare instances, it can cause illness in young infants and the elderly.s. It can be found in or on household surfaces, including those used for food preparation. It’s important to follow instructions for proper preparation, handling, and storage of infant formula. 

WHAT IS BEING DONE?

It should be noted that all four of the customer's formulas have been tested for bacteria and pathogens and came out negative. However, the company has continued to test batches from the lot and will continue to do so.

WHAT DO I DO IF MY FORMULA IS PART OF THE BAD BATCH?

Abbott recommends the following, "If your product is affected by the recall, do not use it and go to similacrecall.com for a refund or replacement. You can also call Similac customer service at 1-800-986-8540.
