Actor Matthew McConaughey made a debut as a guest on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” on Wednesday night. McConaughey addressed the rumors after he got wind of a headline regarding his supposed political aspirations to run for the next Governor of Texas. We asked our intern Lorin to find out if McConaughey was serious or just responding to fans who have suggested he try his hand at politics.

As he laughs it off, he stated, “I have no plans to do that right now. I don’t get politics,” and that, “politics seems to be a broken business; politics needs to redefine its purpose.”

As the star has been a helper at heart, helping to feed firefighters during the wildfires in California last year as well as participating in a reading of “Dazed and Confused,” to aid in voting, it’s clear he is called to lead. In the interview, he states, “as I move forward in life, yes, I am gonna consider leadership roles where I can be most useful,” adding, “I’d love to. I’m doing that regardless.”

In the interview, McConaughey summarizes what he thinks is wrong with politics within the country and while he's running for governor is only a rumor, he doesn’t completely rule out potentially joining the fleet one day.

Overall, the actor states, “I think a lot of people are going, 'It's a time to redefine, to redeclare what politics is. What is the purpose of politics?' That's a real question that I think politicians and politics need to answer. What is its purpose? I want to know that answer and understand that answer first before I would really sort of be interested in hopping in politics.”
