Which Texas City Just Became The 4th Largest? You’ll Be Surprised!

For the longest time in Texas, it's always been about the "big four". Cities that is. Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Austin. Those are always the four cities most people think of and move to when they head to Texas.

Even if they already lived in the state and were moving from a smaller city to a bigger city, those were the four they'd eye or get a job in.

Well, it looks like it's time to change it to the "big five" because Fort Worth has raised its hand in a major way and entered the fray.

Now, Fort Worth was always a big city in its own rite, however, it always seemed to get lumped in with Dallas. Everything you seemed to see was Dallas-Ft. Worth and that's how it was typically referred to. It never seemed to standalone.

Well, it doesn't have a choice now as Fort Worth has officially passed Austin as the fourth most populated city in Texas. According to the latest population estimates, there are 989,878 living in Fort Worth, while there are 986,928 residing in Austin.

Apparently, Fort Worth has been growing faster than any major Texas city, and it's not even close. Despite Austin being the third fastest growing Texas city, it doesn't hold a candle to Fort Worth.

From 2020-2024, Fort Worth has grown a staggering 7.7% as opposed to Austin growing by 2.6%. San Antonio was sandwiched in the middle of them at a growth of 4.3%, still not coming close to the growth rate of Fort Worth.

If you put Dallas and Fort Worth together, it's still not the largest city in Texas. Houston still owns that, even with those two put together, but only by a little over 20,000, so that area is growing at a rapid clip.
