Grab your mask, or two.

This past Monday, White House adviser Dr. Anthony Fauci announced on TODAY people should start double-masking.

By now, masks are nothing new; they have been alleged to help protect yourself and others against the spread of COVID-19.

As far as double-masking, it's wearing a surgical mask underneath a cloth mask that may create the maximum amount of protection; the surgical mask will act as a filter, and the cloth adds an additional layer and will help with the overall fitment.

The words of guidance are not to be taken as a broad statement. There are certain situations where double-masking is appropriate and also inappropriate. One thing this request made me think of was Biden's own words from Friday, January, 22nd, when he said to the media, "there’s nothing we can do to change the trajectory of the pandemic in the next several months." Umm, if there is "nothing" we can do, why are we continuing to force these lockdowns that are doing a number on our economy? If we can't change the trajectory, it really makes one question so many of the current practices.

Wearing multiple masks may be appropriate when you are stuck in a high-risk area, like when in high dense areas that are hard to maintain a safe social distance from other people.

Dr. Catherine Troisi, who specializes in infectious diseases at UT Health, agreed with the guidance; she explained that multiple masks would not need to be worn at all times. Places like doctors’ offices and HEB or situations like traveling on an airplane or would warrant a multi-mask.

For Fauci, using double masks is just common sense. So, if you have a physical covering with one layer, you put another layer on, it just makes common sense that it likely would be more effective.

Many local Texans had a lot to say about Fauci's advice to the nation. Click2Houston  took to the streets to ask around and see exactly how residents feel.

“Working with one mask is bad enough,” said Rick Rodriguez, of Katy. “But two masks? No.”

One man is open to the idea with backed proof. That's understandable; people don't want to blindly follow some guidance without knowing the facts.

“If they have scientific proof that they can show me that it actually is and there’s no repercussions or any kind of side effects on my part for me wearing a mask,” Paul Morrow said.

One woman made a good suggestion:

“Maybe we need to produce some masks that have a little bit more layers,” Virginia Weigel said. “But not so much thickness, but a little more filtration perhaps.”

This double mask guidance from Fauci comes after a recent mandate from President Biden, who has signed executive orders that require wearing masks on airplanes, trains, buses, airports, and federal property.
