According to the Moderna website, the protocol is similar to that of the adults who received a COVID-19 vaccine.
Eligibility:
For children to be eligible, they must be between the ages of 6months and 11 years; they also must be in good health.
Children will not be eligible if they have ever or are currently receiving an investigational vaccine or approved treatment for COVID-19 or have participated in another trial within the past month. Children will also not be eligible to participate in the Moderna kidCOVE trial if they have tested positive for COVID-19 or been around anyone who has tested positive for COVID-19 within two weeks before the first administration of the trial vaccine.

Those who qualify can expect to go through the following steps: The trial consists of two shots. the first shot will initially be given to the child in their upper arm, then about 28 days later, a second dose will be administered; the child will either receive the trial vaccine or a placebo. According to the Moderna site, the trial will last approximately 14 months. During that time, children may be seen up to six times for check-ups. It can be expected that the doctor in the study will connect twice via teleconference after each injection and then monthly after that to observe for COVID-19 symptoms. It will likely be required to queep an E-Diary to track signs and symptoms or anything related to the experience.

This trial is vital to understanding how children react to a COVID-19 vaccination and the ability to fight the virus. Port Lavaca Clinic Associates is joining with Crossroads Clinical Research of Victoria to offer this trial in the area.

According to the Victoria Advocate, Dr. John Clinton, a pediatrician at the Port Lavaca clinic, is leading the local trial. He explained the importance of the trial, “With these trials, you’re truly making a difference.” The results and analysis from trials like these help gather better information about vaccines and their potency and other important aspects like side effects and contradictions.

If this is something you and your family may be interested in participating in, you can visit the Moderna kidCOVE site for more information. If you do not have insurance, that is also okay, as it is not needed to join this clinical trial; compensation for family’s time may also be available. As Dr. Clinton pointed out, “You’re truly making a difference and setting kids up to literally change the world.”
