Jimmy Gonzalez Played in Victoria The Weekend Before He Passed
I had the pleasure of hanging out with Jimmy and getting a picture with him after a performance in Victoria many years ago. I mean, I had no gray hair!
The date was June 6th, 2018 and news started to circulate that Jimmy Gonzalez had passed away! Jimmy has just played in Victoria that previous weekend at the Community Center Dome. I believe it was a private event. I just remember seeing pictures of the stage setup on the floor of the Dome. Were you at that show?
The Grammy Award-winning Jimmy Gonzalez of Grupo Mazz passed away on Wednesday, June 6, 2018, at Methodists Hospital in San Antonio hospital from complications of diabetes. He was 67 years old when he passed. Jimmy's next scheduled show was going to be as the headliner at the Aransas Pass Shrimporee.
Jimmy Gonzalez recorded over 50 albums in his career going back to the days of the original Joe Lopez and Jimmy Gonzalez Y Grupo Mazz. Of those 50+ albums, 18 of them were recorded at Freddie Records in Corpus Christi after Joe and Jimmy parted ways.
Currently, Jimmy's son, Mike, is keeping his dad's music alive with his group, Mike and the Iconiczz, and is currently working on a tribute to his dad. The new project will feature many different Tejano stars singing his dad's music. The project should be out later this year. Keep it locked into KLUB Tejano 106.9 for the latest info. Mike and the Iconcizz will be performing in Victoria in September.
